What is wheelock academy?

Wheelock Academy was a Native American boarding school that operated from 1832 to 1955 in what is now McCurtain County, Oklahoma, United States. It was founded by Congregational missionaries Alice and Thomas Wheelock who were committed to providing education and spiritual guidance to the Choctaw tribe.

The academy provided education to Choctaw girls from ages eight to eighteen and trained them to become educators for their own tribe. At its peak, the school had approximately 200 students and 20 faculty members.

In addition to providing education, the academy also served as a medical center, offering healthcare services to the Choctaw people. The Wheelock Academy also played a significant role in preserving Choctaw culture and traditions.

Today, the site of the former Wheelock Academy serves as a historic landmark and is maintained by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. The property is open to the public and features a museum that showcases artifacts and exhibits related to the history of the academy and the Choctaw tribe.
